Matthew 4:16 - “The people which sat in darkness saw great light; and to them which sat in the region and shadow of death light is sprung up."
In 2009, Minister Lakesha Sewell and Minister Tony Sewell received orders to Shaw AFB, in Sumter, South Carolina. They joined Family Life Center under the leadership of Pastor, Elder Danny Blanding and his wife, First Lady Cheryl Blanding. The Sewell's and their son Christian, who was two years old at the time, were committed to building God's kingdom. On July 4, 2015 Minister Lakesha Sewell was ordained an Elder in The Church of the Living God International at the Annual General Assembly. Six months later, Elder Sewell was made Assistant Pastor of Family Life Center, and in June 2016, she was appointed as Pastor.
After a few months of shepherding God's flock, the Spirit led Elder Sewell to purchase property for the church. While she was in prayer enquiring about closing the sale of a building located on the north side of Sumter, the Lord sent a woman to her church to ask if she wanted to buy a church located near the downtown area. Pastor Sewell, her members, District Superintendent Elder Cornelius Hudson and Bishop James Johnson visited the potential new house of worship. They knew that it was the Lord's hand when the owners dropped the asking price by fifty percent. With help from Bishop Johnson and Augusta Worship Center, the property was purchased on April 20, 2017.
The founding members were Pastor Lakesha Sewell, Assistant Pastor Tony Sewell, Exhorter Janis Pittman, and Brother Christian Sewell. The young congregation received early support from Lily of the Valley in Tampa, Florida who paid the first six months of their rent. Afterwards, the Lord gave Pastor Sewell Matthew 4:16 as an indication of what He was going to do through her ministry and the church she was serving. This led Pastor Sewell and her members to change the name of the church from Family Life Center to Greater Light. Three years later, Greater Light had their Mortgage Burning Ceremony on December 11, 2020, at the height of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Today, Greater Light continues to be a beacon of light to many living in and visiting the city of Sumter.
